NBA Playoffs: Eastern Conference Preview

The 2011 NBA Playoffs kicks off on Saturday, April 16th with the Eastern Conference's top-seeded Chicago Bulls matching up against the eighth-seeded Indiana Pacers at 1PM ET on ESPN. It's appropriate that the Bulls start the NBA postseason since they are also the NBA's top-seeded team, earning homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs with a regular season record of 62-20. So, how do the Eastern Conference series shake out for all of the playoff participants? Peep the preview below.
1. Chicago Bulls (62-20) vs. 8. Indiana Pacers (37-45)
The Pacers (24-17 at home; 13-28 on the road) are almost a vagabond group that made the playoffs due to the overall weakness of the Eastern Conference as they are the only under-.500 team in the postseason. They made a spirited effort when assistant Frank Vogel was named interim head coach, going 20-18 and obviously made the playoffs. Danny Granger is the top talent in the group and while Darren Collison was a bit of a disappointment, other players stepped up their games, particularly Tyler Hansbrough, Josh McRoberts and Roy Hibbert. Rookie Paul George also showed flashes of big-time ability.
However, the Bulls will be too much for the Pacers who seem disjointed compared to the smooth-running machine that is the Bulls. Prediction: Bulls in four games.

In this edition of the EndScore Report, DV and Chris look at all of the match-ups in the Eastern Conference NBA playoffs with the Chicago Bulls versus the Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat versus Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics versus New York Knicks, and the Orlando Magic versus the Atlanta Hawks. Who will step up in the east? Derrick Rose and the Bulls look primed to take the conference, but the Heat and its Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh won't go down easy. Neither will the "old" Big Three of the Celtics - Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce - however, how will the trade of Kendrick Perkins affect the team. And, finally, how about the Magic and its big man, Dwight Howard. Are there implications to how the team's postseason results will affect his staying or leaving the team? It’s going to take a heck of a winning streak to turn the New Jersey Devils from this season’s biggest bust into a playoff contender – at best. After headlining a rather tame summer with the contract controversy of Ilya Kovalchuk, the Devils now find themselves competing with the New York Islanders for last place in the Eastern Conference. The two anti-giants faced off against each other on Friday afternoon and the Devils found it impossible to score on Rick DiPietro, losing 2-0.

Eastern Conference; who against who?

Waking up after another ridiculous impact game from Jaroslav Halak as the Canadiens evened up their series with the Penguins last night at two games apiece, I quickly realized that I had no idea that the other series in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia against Boston, is even going on. After taking a quick look, I found that Boston holds a 3-0 stranglehold on the Flyers with a chance to clinch tonight. I also found that I’m not alone in my ignorance over this series.

The great upsetters

Can you believe it? The unthinkable has happened! Goliath has been beaten by David again. That is, the Montreal Canadiens have ousted the Washington Capitals in the first round, and what’s worse is that not only was it a opening series upset, but it was also a President’s Trophy-winning team that fell to a lowly opponent that barely made their way into the postseason. Sure the series went the seven-game distance, but that’ll be no consolation to Washington fans.

The state of hockey in the state of Pennsylvania is good. With both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers moving on to the second round of the 2010 NHL playoffs, there’s a storyline nobody expected to come taking place. We’re still a full series away from a potential Stanley Cup-berthing series, but as two of the remaining eight teams, the Keystone state is well-represented; although the two teams arrived at their destinations in very different ways.

The back end of the Eastern Conference playoff spots is very tightly contested; a welcome change from most other areas of the NHL standings. The Flyers, Canadiens and Bruins hold the last three positions, each with 82 points and five games remaining. The tiebreaking procedures gives Philadelphia a huge edge over Boston with three more wins total, but a tough final week could be deadly if they don’t play right. They’ll get their chance to start the end right tonight when they welcome those Canadiens.

The Montreal Canadiens, who outplayed the Buffalo Sabres for 57 minutes on Wednesday night, managed to salvage a point and take sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference, but it was at great expense. As one of the hottest teams since the Olympic break, Montreal really folded up last night. After taking a 2-0 lead, thanks to a pair from Andrei Kostitsyn, Buffalo’s late pressure resulted in the equalizing goals coming with 1:59 and then :48 left in the game. They went on to win in a shootout.

Elliott turns around Sens with back-to-back shutouts

Almost everything is coming up Ottawa. The Senators have re-opened a four point lead in the Eastern Conference over Philadelphia and Montreal, thanks largely to a pair of shutouts against those two opponents. Brian Elliott was called to duty and shut the door twice; first in a 2-0 win against the Canadiens then another 2-0 blanking of the Flyers in back-to-back nights. The pair was his fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. He now has 25 wins total.

Montreal-Ottawa clash worth more than two points on Monday

After six straight wins, the Montreal Canadiens felt the bitter taste of defeat at the hands of the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Montreal dropped a 3-2 shootout loss to the Blue and White to keep their consecutive point streak alive. At the other end of the spectrum, the Senators continue their freefall, losing a 5-4 decision to Dallas. The two clubs now find themselves tied at 78 points and share fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, and will face each other Monday night to decide who is more worthy.
